Great trails make getting outside easier and more fun. But great trails don’t happen by accident. They are the result of planning, design, collaboration, construction, and maintenance.

This starts with quality education. 

This spring we’re partnering with IMBA Trail Solutions, the leaders in non-motorized trail development and education to bring members of the OSI Community a level of training and support never before accessible from your own home.  

This course is a complete introduction to trail planning, design, and building. 

You will learn

  1. How to select the best terrain and plan amazing trails

  2. How to design trails that deliver the experience you want

  3. How to use different construction techniques to build lasting trails

The course will take place over four weeks online and will include the following

- 4 live online webinars & roundtable discussions with Trail Solutions Professional Staff:

  • Tues, April 13th - 6 PM - 7:30 PM EST Kick Off Meeting & Orientation

  • Tues, April 20th - 6 PM - 8 PM EST Planning

  • Tues, April 27th - 6 PM - 8 PM EST Construction

  • Tues, May 4th - 6 PM - 8 PM EST

    Design

- Independent learning modules in Planning, Design, and Construction

- Interactive peer to peer online forum

- Interactive Q&A forum with instructors

- Opportunities to assess and discuss your own local terrain with the pros 

- All live sessions will be recorded and uploaded for those unable to attend live

  • Experience-based planning  

  • How to assess terrain both on your desktop and in the field

  • Understanding sustainable trail guidelines

  • How to read a map, plan, or narrative and translate into specifications for trail design

  • Using a clinometer to layout better trail

  • The basics of bench cutting

  • The basics of rock armoring

  • The basics of turn construction  

This course is open to anyone interested in learning more about trail development. No previous experience or knowledge is required.

This course is being offered to through the OSI Community, and will be run by IMBA Trail Solutions with support from OSI Staff.

IMBA Trail Solutions (TS) is the international leader in developing singletrack trails, with experience in over 500 projects in the North America, Europe, and Asia. Their staff excels at planning, design, and construction of trail systems that provide high-quality experiences for local riders and destination visitors while simultaneously minimizing environmental impacts. Trail Solutions is a fee-for-service based arm of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. IMBA’s mission is to create, enhance, and preserve great mountain biking experiences.

 

Trail Solutions staff hold a broad base of applicable skills and knowledge from planning, landscape architecture, environmental sciences to GIS systems, AutoCAD, and graphic design. Their wealth of experience has allowed them to develop the gold standard guidelines for creation of both sustainable and enjoyable singletrack trails. These guidelines have influenced all major federal land management agencies and a large number of state and local parks departments.

 

Trail Solutions pride themselves on the positive experiences they have provided to the millions of active trail users around the world, and in the economic independence that communities have achieved through the development of destination trail systems.
