OSI Community Interview: Learning through the Eyes of a Mountain Guide

Dick Chasse Portrait.jpeg

What can the winter environment teach us about leading others?

Dick Chasse wanted to be a mountain guide ever since he was a teenager, growing up in Waterville, ME. After taking a leadership role in his high school outing club and job shadowing at a university outdoor program he began a career as professional mountain guide and outdoor educator. Dick has been guiding since 1998, building a diverse resume of experience taking him from ski guiding in Iceland, to managing logistics and risk in Mozambique, to sharing his love of Katahdin’s winter magic.

As head guide for Acadia Mountain Guides, Dick calls the coast of Maine and the Blue Hill peninsula home. He has guided and climbed throughout the US and in South America. His ski mountaineering experience has taken him around the world, from Maine to Alaska, Iceland, Japan, and the Alps.

Dick’s specialty is the attention he devotes to his clients; he truly loves guiding. “I constantly find myself thinking about how to make the next experience better for my clients. I consider it an honor to take people out to the cliffs and mountains,” he says. “The wonderful secret of guiding is that I learn as much from my clients as they learn from me.”

This month we’re catching up with Dick as he prepares to share some of his accumulated experience and wisdom with us through our upcoming Winter Leadership Series.

Join us as we discuss questions such as…

  • What can guiding and teaching in harsh environments teach us about approaching the outdoors every day?

  • What does it mean to have a curiosity mindset, and why is it so easy for us to miss?

  • What are some simple strategies for thriving in the winter outdoors that people often don’t use?

  • How can we build better systems and frameworks for successful outdoor leadership experiences?

  • How can we inspire the participants we work with to develop their own curiosity about the outdoors?

This interview is free and open to all. Sign up below and you’ll receive the link to join via Zoom.
