Bike Technician Training - Basic Service & Repair

Confidently keep your program’s bicycles up and running.

Tackle common issues including brakes, shifting, flat tires, broken chains, and worn cables.

Learn to troubleshoot and diagnose bigger problems effectively.

Gain comfort with skills, tools, and best practices in the workshop.




This is an ideal introduction, overview, and guided practice for anyone that works with bicycles on a regular basis. This includes people leading bike-based programs, people managing bicycles in their own programs, and those looking to find volunteer or paid work maintaining bikes in their community. The goal of this training is to prepare participants to confidently complete basic service and repair of most common bicycles.

Topics Include

  • Inspection and maintenance of Drivetrains (shifting, derailleurs, chains, cranksets), braking systems, bearings, frames, and wheels.

  • Repair and replacement of drivetrain and brake systems.

  • Basic suspension service and adjustment

  • Rider sizing and fitting

  • Workshop set up, safety, and management

Students will be working hands-on repairing bikes each day with supervision from the instructor.

Thanks to our hosting partner, Katahdin Gear Library, these workshops will take place over four days at the Katahdin Gear Library in Millinocket, ME, and will include

  • Interactive classroom sessions

  • Hands-on guided practice

  • Open Q&A with instructors and peers

  • Opportunities to assess and discuss your own community’s challenges with experienced professionals 

Itinerary

Day 1: 9 AM to 4:30 PM

  • Introduction to tools, workshop management, and safety

  • Initial inspection & quick fixes

Day 2: 9 AM to 4:30 PM

  • Drivetrain & brakes

  • Inspection and service

  • Repair and Replacement

Day 3: 9 AM to 4:30 PM

  • Frames, bearings, and wheels

  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing

Day 4: 9 AM to 4:30 PM

  • Suspension overview

  • Fitting & sizing

  • Management systems

This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about bike repair and maintenance. This includes program directors, program leaders, community outdoor advocates, gear library managers, and volunteers.

Meet Your Instructor

Von Perry, Owner & Founder of Bear’s Head Bicycles

Von Perry, owner of Bear’s Head Bikes, has been a professional bicycle mechanic and avid rider for over 25 years. Von was certified in bicycle service, repair, and fitting at Barnett’s Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs, CO. Originally from Easton, Maine, Von now lives and rides in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
